Hot Laps

by Michael Perricone

Anyone at Riverhead Raceway on Sat., Sept. 7, 2013 could say it was Timmy Solomito’s night. The 21-year-old from Islip piloted the Wayne and Joanne Andersonowned #15 Eastport feeds modified to fast time in time trials, picked the pole and swept both Twin 30’s. Solomito and the team were especially pleased with the results considering they were in the midst of some controversy the week before.

Tommy Walkowiak used to own the Blunderbust Division. However the veteran broke a year-and-a-half dry spell with a win on this night. He drove through the field and passed Tom Puccia for the win. Puccia is a driver that is overdue for a win as well.

In the competitive Super Pro Truck Division, everyone seemed to be having mechanical difficulties. Louie Maestri may have seen his title chances dashed when he was chased to the pits late in the race. Then defending Champion Roger Turbush dropped a rear end out of his truck ending his night. Mark Stewart saved the night for Turbush Racing with his fourth win of the year.

In the Charger Division, everyone also seemed to be losing fluids and auto parts. However C.J. Lehmann got his second win of 2013 when the smoke cleared and the race continued.

Finally Kenny Hyde Jr. notched his second Figure #8 win of the year. What was significant about this was that it came on his birthday. His first win came on the night his girlfriend celebrated her big day. Hyde may have been cheated out of a third win because his twin sister Kim celebrated her birthday on the same night. Hard luck driver Mike Mujsce spun himself out giving Hyde the opening.

FROM THE PITS: Tom Anderson in the #23 Charger is also due for a win. Spoke to him at length and he introduced me to his crew which includes his son. The Medford Resident truly races on a shoe string counting on sponsors and crew to get by. They just found the set up for more speed so they should be a little more competi- tive as the season lines down. Riverhead Raceway
