Missing Amityville child found safe

Police, firefighters and neighbors search for almost an hour

by Carolyn James

A four-year-old Amityville child, missing for almost an hour, was discovered safe in his home fast asleep behind some pillows and bolsters on a bed in a second floor bedroom.

Amityville police got a call at 7:13 p.m. Dec. 9, from a resident on Coles Avenue who reported that the child was missing. The caller, the child’s babysitter, told police she had seen him approximately 15 minutes earlier.

Amityville Village Police responded to the scene and contacted Suffolk County Police requesting additional units to search for the child. Canine units also responded.

“We also called the Amityville Fire Department and asked for volunteers,” said Amityville Police Chief Don Dobby. “It was ‘all hands on deck’.”

Dobby said that in addition to police and firefighters, neighbors who heard about the incident came out with flashlights and began searching for the child.

“That is one of the wonderful things about Amityville,” said Dobby. “It is a real community and when someone needs help, everyone is there to pitch in.”

The missing child raised great concern because the home is in close proximity to the water. “That was a worry,” said Dobby, who added that everyone was relieved and happy that the incident ended the way it did.
