Hot Laps

by Michael Perricone

After a hiatus of sorts, Riverhead Raceway Hot Laps is back to update you on all the action and personalities each week in 2013.

June 22 was a night for people with “Roger” in their name. First, Roger Oxee led two segments of the Late Model battle from green flag to checkered flag to garner his 63rd Riverhead Raceway victory in the division.

Later in the evening, Tom Rogers, Jr. took advantage of a lighter-than-usual Modified field to steer his Joe Ambrose owned, Tanger Outlets-sponsored mount to Victory Lane for his second win in as many weeks. Some Riverhead Raceway regulars chose to travel across Long Island Sound to Connecticut’s Waterford Speedbowl for the Whelen Modified Tour event on this night.

Finally, Roger Maynor of Bay Shore made a strong bid for the Figure 8 victory but came up short. The emotional winner was the #66 of Johnny Vullo of Farmingville. The last time that car sat in Victory Lane, it was piloted by the late Joe Biondolillo, Jr, in the 1990s. During an emotional postrace interview, it was obvious that Vullo, a member of the family, was pleased to have put the #66 where it belonged.

Another emotional victor was Frank Scimeca, Jr. in the Legend Division. The Bay Shore resident captured his first win in any division after years of competition at Riverhead Raceway. Though he made it look easy, it wasn’t, as he had to negotiate a minefield of wrecks and spins in the early going.

FROM THE PITS: While Roger Oxee was pleased with how his IGA of Southold-sponsored car performed in capturing both segments of the Late Model event, due to a different scoring system on this night, he was credited with only one win. “To add insult to injury, it’s my lowest payout ever for a win, but I’m still having fun at 61,” said Oxee... Frank Scimeca, Jr. will try to go for two wins in as many weeks as the Legends will pay $1,000 to win this Saturday night…Racing is most certainly a family affair, as I have now seen Joe Biondolillo, Sr. and Jr., Johnny Vullo and Vincent Biondolillo in my writing career.
