Village approves limited cabaret license for "troublesome" El Rodeo bar
A limited, six-month cabaret license was approved by the Amityville Village Board for Ana and Edgar Reyes of El Rodeo, a bar restaurant at 528-30 Broadway, after the Village officials said they continued to be concerned about the operation of that business.
The approval was made at the board meeting Feb. 8. “We need to sit down and discuss not only how you can be a good neighbor but also how to be sure your clients and patrons don’t engage in any criminal or violent activity there,” said Mayor Peter T. Imbert to Edgar Reyes, who attended the meeting.
There have been three major incidents at and near the bar recently, including one shooting. The board said that Reyes must take control over his establishment and that they were extending the six-month license to give him the opportunity to do that.
“Now I have more security because I want my place to be a safe environment for my customers,” said Reyes, who installed a camera system there in January. Reyes also told the board that he had experienced some threats and gang-related incidents to which the mayor and Amityville Village Police Chief Donald Dobby replied that the Village was prepared to do whatever it could to help him secure his business against such criminal activity and protect his patrons.
Residents living near the area have also complained about the bar, asking the board to deny the application outright.
Joanne Fisk of Maple Drive told the board that there were a violent acts in and near the location. “We are extremely concerned and it is a problem site,” she said. “We don’t want you to approve a cabaret license.”
“We are approving this application for six months only, and we will review it after that,” responded Mayor Imbert. “We will be monitoring it closely.”
In other Village business, the board:
•renewed a number of taxicab drivers’ license applications;
•approved, for 60 days, a temporary storage container at 64 South Ireland Place;
•retained the auditing firm of Skinnon, Faber and Heck for auditing the Village’s books for the year ending May, 2010 at a cost not to exceed $17,000;
•approved a tax sale for Fri., March 12 at Village Hall;
•announced year-end statistics for the fire department, which included 1,029 calls;
•released figures for January payments for fees on parking and traffic tickets, totaling almost $17,000.
The next Village Board meeting is Mon., March 16, 8 p.m., Village Hall, third floor.
