Ukrainian egg painting workshop offered March 27

2010-03-10 / Events & Calendar

A workshop in the art of Pysanky, Ukrainian egg painting, will be held at the Circle Gallery of the Amityville Artists Circle, 186 Broadway, Amityville, Sat., March 27 at noon. The cost is $20 per person which includes all materials.

Amityville Artist Circle (AAC) member Kathy Grechen will be demonstrating Pysanky at the Circle Gallery on Sat., March 27. Artists and guests will watch Grechen, a selftaught Pysanky artist, who has been practicing this folk art form since the age of 18. Patiently and with a steady hand she will build up her dyes until an intricately designed, multi-colored egg emerges.

The Eastern European art of egg painting, the Ukrainian version being arguably the most famous, is known as Pysanky, from a verb meaning “to write.” In Ukrainian households near Easter time, eggs are created as gifts for family and friends. It’s hard to find anyone not amazed by the seemingly endless variety of multi-colored patterns and mosaics achieved using little more than an egg, wax and dyes.

While at the Circle Gallery, enjoy the latest exhibit of works from local artists. Called Goodbye Winter, Welcome Spring, the show features affordable paintings, sculpture and other media.

For more information or to register for the workshop, contact Fran Ackerman at 631-691-1775.
