In order to help ensure that the Edmund W. Miles Middle School winter music concert was a great success, members of Amityville Memorial High School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society took time out of their busy academic schedules to coach the younger student musicians. The two sets of students gathered in small groups in the hallways and music classrooms as the middle-schoolers played their musical numbers and described any difficulties they were having with their pieces. Thisis the second year that the Tri-M Music Honor Society members have participated in peer tutoring the middle school music students. Middle school band director Joe Sciolino remarked that this activity is a successful way of ironing out kinks before the annual school concert. “The students see us, the teachers, every day, so this activity is very exciting for them. They seem to listen to the older students who have more experience, but who are young enough to understand the kind of problems they might be having,” Sciolino stated. Tri-M Music Honor Society is an international honor society that recognizes secondary music students for music ability, academic excellence, school involvement and community service.
