When she was a young girl growing up, Susan Gebel remembers her mother Carolyn Ann, working hard to raise her family and to study to become a registered nurse. “She always wanted to give back to people and it took her eight years, going to school at night, to earn her nursing degree,” said her daughter. “She pulled all A’s and now that I am older, I am even more impressed with what she did and how she did it.” Carolyn Ann Gebel of Amityville died Nov. 16, 2009 at her Bunny Lane home after a lengthy illness. She was 70. Mrs. Gebel was born Dec. 25, 1938 in Astoria to Wesley Bullard and Florence (Scholl) Symington and had graduated Amityville High School in 1957.
