Mary Alice Powell, Sunday School teacher, Amityvillian
Lifetime Amityville resident Mary Alice Powell died Oct. 26, 2009 at Broadlawn Manor Nursing Home in Amityville. She was 97.
She was born May 1, 1912 in Amityville to John Vale and Lucy (Cornelius) Powell and graduated Amityville schools. She lived on
Union Avenue for many years before moving to Snug Harbor in the 1990s. For many years, she worked for the former Haff Plumbing Supply in Amityville until her retirement.
“My aunt was a very quiet person,” said her niece Janet Powell King of Amityville. “She enjoyed her community work and being around her family.”
Ms. Powell was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Amityville where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Amityville Historical Society and the Tanner Park Senior Center.
Ms. Powell also leaves behind her brother: Kenneth Powell of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers; Harold V., George E. and C. Wesley Powell.
The Rev. Doctor Louise Stowe-Johns, pastor, First United Methodist Church officiated at the Funeral Service in the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville followed by interment in the Amityville Cemetery.
