Fire District races Dec. 8th
Elections for Fire Commissioners are being held in the Deer Park, West Babylon, West Islip and Copiague Fire Districts. Commissioners are volunteers and receive no compensation for their service. They are responsible for establishing policies and procedures within the department, working with the other members to assess and secure equipment and apparatus, and for the department’s annual budget and expenses. The elections are open to registered voters in each district.
In Copiague, Fire Commissioner Angelo Licata is seeking his second five-year term of office and is unopposed. A 22-year member of the department, he came up through the ranks of the Hook and Ladder and Rescue companies and said he and the Board have worked hard over the past several years to improve the district’s facilities and its emergency response system. The Copiague Fire Department responds to approximately 2,000 calls for fires, rescue and miscellaneous services.
In Deer Park, appointed Commissioner Andrew Duguid faces opposition from Chris Schiavo for a five-year term. In West Babylon, incumbent Com- missioner John Manzi is seeking a five-year term and is running unopposed and in West Islip, incumbent George Iwasiuk is also running unopposed. In that District Raymond Rendina and Victor Paduano are vying for two of the remaining years of a five-year seat formerly held by Kevin O'Brien who stepped down.
The election is Dec. 8 and is open to all registered residents in each district. In Copiague the polls are open at the Great Neck Road firehouse from 6 to 9 p.m.
