Protect your right to vote—get to the polls

2009-10-14 / Opinion

Every year at this time, as we are immersed in the myriad issues, ideas, debates and platforms of candidates running for office in November. We spend a lot of time trying to sort it out for our readers and giving them the information they need to make intelligent, informed and educated choices at the polls. It takes us several months to put it all together and to ensure that all candidates, all voices and all views are presented.

In moments of reflection, however, something else comes through. Thatis, the hard work and dedication that so many of the candidates and their campaign workers put in to ensure that the democratic process is in place and that you, the voter, have the opportunity to take part in it.

We live in cynical times, and politicians are often the brunt of jokes and public disdain. They are accused of being self serving of themselves or their parties, and this is often used as an excuse for not voting by those too lazy or too apathetic to get to the polls.

Just how deeply imbedded these sentiments are in our society is evident by the abysmal voting statistics that show that only about one in three registered voters get to the polls. And those figures don’t even take into account those eligible to vote but who simply don’t register.

It’s time that we have a reality check here in this country and take to heart the commitment not only of those who run for office and their supporters but also those of our veterans who sacrificed so much, sometimes with their lives, to maintain your right to cast a ballot.

Candidates, like all other people, are not perfect. They share the weaknesses, foibles and peculiarities of humanity, but by and large are brave enough, committed enough and hopeful enough to take a stand. Theyget up off their couches and get out of their homes and work to become part of something bigger than themselves.

Thesystem, like the people who are part of it, is also not perfect, but so much of it depends on our commitment and participation. Lincoln said it best: “We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.”

Be a part of America’s last best hope. Vote on November 3, and if you are not registered, do so today.
