Thelaws of common sense
The stupid things that people sometimes do never cease to amaze us and when society has to pass laws prohibiting those activities, we are reminded that in many ways we are living in an Alice in Wonderland world where logic is not always the rule of the day. We have laws that warn people they cannot drive a motor vehicle when inebriated, or cross the street in the path of oncoming traffic. We can’t assault another human being or steal their valuables. Duh! The latest is a state law prohibiting texting while driving, the newest twist on the rule that you cannot talk on the cell phone while driving. You would think that any sane adult, capable of operating a motor vehicle and accorded the right to do so with a state license would not have to be told that. Alas, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland continue to be a part of our lives. And the law, it seems, is always one step behind stupidity. It is enacted only aftersome individual commits the thoughtless act and causes havoc. Perhaps “catch up” laws are not the way to go. What we need is a generic law permitting our police officers to penalize those who abandon common sense and act in abandonment of decency. We could call it the "stupid ticket."
