Local swimmer organizes fund-raiser for Diabetes Foundation
More than 80 swimmers, ages 7 to 60, took part in the Waves of Hope fund-raiser swim in Amityville last month. Theevent was organized by Christine Swartout of Amityville, a varsity swimmer at St. Anthony’s High School. “It was a lot of work but it was worth it,” said Chris­tine. “We want to hold this every year.” More...

Midshipman Alexander Donald Daye, of Ami­tyville, graduated on June 22 from the U.S. Merchants Marine Academy, Kings Point, with the 197 mem­bers of the class of 2009. The son of Donald and Nancy Daye, he received a Third Mate merchant marine license and a U.S. Armed Forces commission at the ceremony. He addi­tionally was awarded a bachelor of science degree. Several members of the Kiwanis Club of Copiague attended the annual Lindenhurst Kiwanis Steak Fry at Firemen’s Memorial Park. Lindenhurst holds this annual event in August to raise money for scholarships. Copiague resident Robert “Bob” C. Schultheiss died suddenly July 31, 2009 at his Scudder Avenue home. He was 55 and lived in the Amityville and Copiague communities for the last eight years. The stupid things that people sometimes do never cease to amaze us and when society has to pass laws prohibiting those activities, we are reminded that in many ways we are living in an Alice in Wonderland world where logic is not always the rule of the day.
