Ducks sign outfielder Jose Herrera; Ford inactive

Flock inks outfielder Jose Herrera

 
Last week, the Ducks announced the signing of outfielder Jose Herrera, who hit .331 with 16 home runs and 93 RBI last season with Newark of the Atlantic League.

"Jose gives us another big bat for the middle of the lineup," Ducks manager Gary Carter said.

Herrera, 36, spent the last four seasons with Newark, where he hit .328 with 57 home runs and 259 RBI. He was MVP of the 2007 Atlantic League playoffs and helped the Bears win a title. He is also the first Atlantic League player to crack three homers in a single playoff contest.

Having played in 141 Major League games with the Oakland Athletics, Herrera has six homers and 39 RBI at that level.

The Ducks placed outfielder Lew Ford on the inactive list.

Coach spotlight: Bud Harrelson

Bud Harrelson has a

knack for winning. He did it as a player with the 1969 Mets, as a coach with the 1986 Mets and as a manager with the 2004 Ducks.

Also the Ducks Senior VP of Baseball Operations, Harrelson has coached with the team since its inaugural season in 2000.

Harrelson played shortstop for the Mets from 1965-1977 and ranks second in team history in games played (1,322) and atbats (4,390), third in triples (45), fifth in hits (1,029) and ninth in runs (490).

Atlantic League bits and bites

On Thursday, July 16, the Atlantic League welcomed its 20 millionth fan since the league started 12 years ago.

"Our goal every year is to provide affordable family entertainment for all Atlantic League fans and their support is what keeps us going," said Joe Klein, Executive Director of the Atlantic League.

In player moves, Southern Maryland announced the signing of Major League veteran outfielder Michael Tucker, Bridgeport signed former Major League pitcher Hector Carrasco and the Toronto Blue Jays purchased the contract of Southern Maryland pitcher Matt Hensley.
