Copiague resident Victor A. Janas died July 12, 2009. He was 89.

Born in Maspeth, Queens, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and was based in the Pacific. For most of his life, he lived in Flushing, Queens and had moved to Dante Avenue in Copiague five years ago to live closer to his daughter.

He spent his career as an accountant for the Sperry Gyroscope Company and was Chairman of the Sperry Credit Union Board of Directors until he was 83 years old.

"He just loved it," said his daughter Ann Pisarello. "He said, near the end, that his one regret was not being able to continue going into the credit union."

Mr. Janas leaves behind his wife: Jean (nee Kaftan) of 60 years; his other children: Jane of Manhattan, Victor and his wife Bernadette of Monroe, New Jersey and Janice Galbraith and her husband David of Menlo Park, California. His son-in-law William Pisarello of Copiague, ten grandchildren and his sister, Sophie Krzeski also survive him.

Mr. Janas reposed at the D'Andrea Brothers Funeral Home, Copiague, on July 14, 2009. A Funeral Mass was held on July 15, 2009 at Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church, Copiague, followed by interment in Calverton National Cemetery.
