Longtime Amityville resident and retired Grumman employee Bernard G. McCartan died April 19, 2009 at his home. He was 68.

He was born in Dumbarton, Scotland on June 3, 1940 to Joseph and Mary (McManamin)McCartan and had emigrated to the U.S. He served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Marines from 1964 to 1967 and earned several medals and decorations. For 25 years he worked in Grumman Data Systems as a programmer.

A longtime parishioner of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, Mr. McCartan was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and St. Regis Knights of Columbus in Ronkonkoma.

Mr. McCartan leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Elizabeth Rogan McCartan of Amityville; his children: Danielle Hamilton and her husband Daniel of Huntington, Lisa Kim and her husband Taewan of Syracuse, Mariclaire Rigby and her husband Chris of Clyde, N.Y. and B.J. of Amityville; his grandchildren: Phoenix, Fiona, Griffin, Riley, Grady and one baby girl on the way; his mother: Mary McCartan; his siblings: Margaret Adair and her husband Ray of Bernardsville, New Jersey, Joseph and his wife Joanne of Garden City Park, Paulette Magowan of Mahwah, New Jersey, and Lily McCartan and Calvin Lancaster of Venice, Florida.

VFW and prayer services were led by Deacon Cameron at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville on April 21, 2009. Father Lachlan Cameron of St. Rose of Lima officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin's R.C. Church assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Military Honors and private cremation followed. Interment of cremains took place at the Long Island National Cemetery.
