Evelyn Webster at 103, volunteer and retired Amityville educator

Evelyn Webster Evelyn Webster Longtime Amityville resident and active volunteer Evelyn Nash Webster died Feb. 14, 2009 at Broadlawn Manor in Amityville. The well-known community member was 103.

She was born April 10, 1905 in Elnora, New York to Andrew L. and Florence A. (Brooks) Nash. She had lived on Riverleigh Place in Amityville.

Mrs. Webster was an elementary teacher in the Amityville school district for many years and was active in many clubs, such as the Amityville Women's Club, the Mary P. Myton Literary Group and the western Suffolk Retired teacher's Association. She was a 76-year member of Chapter #700 Order of the Eastern Star in Amityville and an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Amityville. For 81 years she was a member of St. Mary's Women's Guild and was also a former member of the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women.

"She was such a gracious and lovely lady who always had a smile on her face" said Ellen Ricciuti, president of the Amityville Historical Society who knew her for about 30 years. "Everyone loved her and Amityville will miss her."

Mrs. Webster leaves behind her granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica LeBlanc, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, George Hayward Webster in 1979 and her son, Richard A. in 2003.

An Eastern Star Service was held at the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on Feb. 18, 2009 followed by a prayer service. Father Randolph Jon Geminder, rector, St. Mary's Episcopal Church officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial in the church followed by private cremation.
