A case of kindness

Thank you to the many readers who responded to the ad in our newspapers for their used suitcases. More than 100 carrying bags and suitcases arrived at our offices and have been delivered to the Department of Social Services.

These suitcases will be distributed to youngsters who are removed from homes by the courts. Their plight came to our attention by a former lawmaker who said that these children, who were often quickly whisked from homes, more often than not had to place their personal belongings in paper bags or plastic garbage bags. The feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness they often endured during a very traumatic time in their lives surely was magnified by the way in which they had to carry all they owned in life.

As a result of the generosity of our readers and with the assistance of S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley's office, which helped us in this project, many youngsters will now at least be able to have a suitcase in which to carry their possessions when they are moved.

We hope that this helps alleviate some of the difficulties they endure and makes them feel a little better about themselves and their situations. Our readers made that possible.
