One of the local collection sites is Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, 147 Park Ave., Amityville and reached at 631-264-0763. Collection times are Thurs. Nov. 20 and Fri. Nov. 21, 6 to 10 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 22, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sun., Nov. 23 by appointment.

"We are already hearing about individuals and families who are planning to bring anywhere from one to 1,000 shoebox gifts to drop-off sites all over the country," said Dana Stark, Operation Christmas child director in New York. "People aren't letting the economy stop them from getting into the joy of Christmas and giving to children who live in the most desperate situations.
