Amityville soccer •The Amityville Gunners (SSI U 16) started the season on Sept. 21, with a good old rump kicking; unfortunately, their rumps were roasted by a clearly superior (and older) Elwood squad, 7-2. The lads actually held their own under the circumstances. It was 5-0 at half time, but minutes into the second half, Dylan Rosser converted a penalty kick and Anthony Vasquez scored on a beautiful feed from Cameron Cisek, cutting the score to 5-3. The shaken Cougars regrouped and sealed their fate. Nonplussed, the Gunners sailed into Sayville and trounced the Baymen on the following weekend with stellar efforts by Max Morin in goal and Brian Oliver, Mike Mehary and Carlos Umana on offense. •The Amityville Stingrays (SSI U 14) notched their first victory of the season with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Lindenhurst Ladybugs on Sept. 28. Midfielder Joanne D'Alessio's pinpoint pass set up the goal, with Sarah O'Neill providing the kick. Paige O'Neill was superb in fullback, along with sweeper Aimee Calzolano, who kept Lindenhurst at bay throughout the game. Newcomer Celine Gellineau and seasoned Stingray veteran Amanda Morotta played inspired, gritty soccer, and longtime Stingray's Keeper Caroline Tofalli notched her first ever shutout to seal the victory. •In the Amityville U7 division on Sunday Sept. 28, it was a rumble at the beach as the Rockets and Stingrays clashed in a battle that won't soon be forgotten. For the Rockets, Sean Casey notched his first goal of the season and was relentless on offense. Joe Crema was flying all over the field, in one sequence breaking up an offensive threat and then taking it to the house narrowly missing a score. For the Stingrays, Nick Garcia had several break ups in the defensive end, and netted a scorching roof topper that was impossible to defend. Sam Taylor was a brick wall in the net with what seemed to be about 30 saves on the day. At the end the score was all tied up, but everyone was a winner. The kids walked off the field to prepare for the reality of spelling tests and phonics homework until the next battle, this Sunday.
