Wonder Garden Provides Living Learning Lab

At Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Public School District, students continue to marvel at the wonders of life in a garden since a 1997 Teacher's Center grant received by Carolyn Dodd, Peggy Gonser, and former principal Frank Garcia allowed the Wonder Garden to come to fruition. The garden provides a living science lab for all students, teaching them the importance of feeding, watering and nurturing plants and animals. "The garden not only satisfies the children's curiosity, but also allows them to develop a sense of pride that comes with accomplishment and responsibility," stated Northeast Speech teacher Colleen Kretz. The community has also become involved in the Wonder Garden through the donation of plants and funds to maintain the garden. The

Kiwanis Club of Amityville has been a source of support, building the picnic tables and installing the irrigation system.

Recently, through the Town of Babylon, Northeast students were able to use their outdoor learning lab as a backdrop for a special Youth Service Day project sponsored by the Town and Supervisor Steve Bellone. Florence Findley, director of beautification for the Town of Babylon came to Northeast to provide students with gloves and bags to clean up the Wonder Garden and plant a variety of multi-colored flowers.
