Locals Serve •Navy Ensign Richard L. Brooks, son of Sylvia Brooks of Amityville, recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. Brooks successfully completed four years of intensive academic, physical and professional military training, resulting in a bachelor of science degree. The mission of the United States Naval Academy is to develop its Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically, in order to prepare combat leaders of character for the Navy and Marine Corps. The Naval Academy currently has more than 4, 000 students who comprise the Brigade of Midshipmen, and who come from every state in the union. Each year, nearly 15, 000 young men and women apply, but less than 1, 300 are accepted. Brooks is a 2004 graduate of St.Anthony's High School of Melville. •Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Taluto, The Adjutant General, announced the recent reenlistment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve the community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard. From our area, Sergeant Jerieme Murrell from Amityville has reenlisted to continue service with the Company F (Field Support Company 427th Brigade •Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Patrick J. Clendenning, son of Marie A. Malatak of Amityville, departed on a scheduled deployment as part of the Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) while assigned to the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George homeported in San Diego. Prior to deploying, Clendenning and more than 5,500 Sailors and Marines of the Peleliu ESG successfully completed a Composite Training Unit Exercise and a Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX). The JTFEX is the final step in preparing the strike group for deployment, and is designed to test its ability to operate in a complex, hostile environment with other U.S. and coalition forces.
Clendenning is a 2003 graduate of Amityville Memorial High School of and joined the Navy in July 2005.
