Copiague students practice fire safety
Every year as part of this partnership, Copiague's elementary school students participate in an essay and poster contest that allows them to showcase their creative skills and the important fire safety lessons they have learned. At a special ceremony held at the Copiague Fire Department last fall, 43 students from the district were honored for their artistic contributions to this year's contest, which was based upon the theme of "Practice Your Escape Plan". Attended by Copiague Fire Department personnel, members of Copiague School District's Board of Education, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Kathleen Bannon, Deauville Gardens Principal Robert Donnellan, and Susan E. Wiley Principal Michael Kelly, the ceremony honored the top three student contributions from each elementary school. Five overall winners were then selected from each grade level from across the district for originality and creativity.
This year's grade-level winners are Samantha Sattler (first grade), Deja Stephen (second grade), Eileen Gutierrez (third grade), Lauren Krauzlis (fourth grade), and William Estevez (fifth grade). Each winner received a $50 gift certificate to Toys R Us from the Fire Department.
