Jerome D'Amaro: father of local lawmaker
"My dad was a very caring man who worked hard his entire life and always put his family first," said Leg. Lou D'Amaro. Born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx, he served in the Korean War as sergeant of an artillery unit in Korea. After graduating from college, he moved to Deer Park and raised his children with his wife of 55 years, Marzia. In 1989 the family moved to North Babylon, and in 2004 to Bay Shore. They had a winter home in Boca Raton, Florida. Mr. D'Amaro worked as a civil engineer and helped build many of Long Island's roads during his time at the State Transportation Department. He later ran his own engineering and land surveying firmon Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park, a road he helped design. After his retirement in 1990, two of his sons took over the business. According to his family, he loved to travel the world, build model ships and spend time with loved ones. In addition to his son Lou, and his wife, Marzia, Mr. D'Amaro also leaves behind his other sons: Jerome and his wife Jeni of Manorville and Robert and his wife Lori of San Diego; his daughter in law Christine; six grandchildren; and other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Paul, a former State Supreme Court Justice.
He reposed at the Mangano Funeral Home in Deer Park on April 30, 2008. A Funeral Mass was held May 1, 2008 at Sts. Cyril & Methodius R.C. Church in Deer Park followed by entombment in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
