Thanks for giving teachers a voice
Dear Editor:

Thank you for publishing Amityville Teachers Association President Carolyn Dodd's letter. As a former teacher and mentor of new teachers, I agree wholeheartedly with Ms. Dodd's position.

As educators, we need to get the message out to the public that you can't evaluate teachers based on testing scores alone. Teacher evaluation is a complicated process and as such, demands thoughtful planning and procedures. It is a dangerous practice to base a new teacher's tenure solely on her/his student test scores. I've personally seen the consequence of this trend.

Please continue to advocate for teachers in the Beacon. In today's teaching climate more than ever, we need community support and understanding. As with all problems, we need a real understanding of the facts and a willingness to work on the solution. Both School Boards and Teacher's Unions would be better served to leave the inflammatory rhetoric aside and spend their efforts working out appropriate solutions.
