Town of Babylon hosts Black History Month event; many locals honored

"The Challenge" was the theme of this year's African American History Celebration, sponsored by the Town of Babylon on Sat. Feb., 23. Master of ceremony of the event was Ken Grimball, general news reporter for WCBS-News radio 88 in Manhattan. The event also recognized several outstanding citizens. Terrance "Boozer" Edwards, an Amityville Memorial High School graduate, class of '71, received the Unity Award. Other winners included:

•Joseph Slinger of Slinger/Hasgll Funeral Home received the Economics Award;

•North Amityville Community Economic Council received the Community Service Award, recognizing its work in community revitalization and social and economic stabilization of the North Amityville community. Also recognized under this category was Saunders Omnipresent Network, which provides initiatives to improve the quality of life for Babylon residents;

•Rosemary English received the Special Recognition Award, posthumously, who taught in the Wyandanch School District for more than 20 years and was active in that community.

Shown at the event are honorees with local officials, NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney; Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone, Judge Toni Bean, S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley and former Babylon Town Clerk Janet Tinsley Colbert. Photos by Joe Turner
Also receiving this award was Andre Edwards of Team Underrated;

•Jerry Powell received a Special Recognition Award who operates a basket- ball training camp, Basketball Results, offering many young hopefuls the opportunity to improve their game and build their confidence.

Speaking at the event for Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts III of the Nationally Renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem was Rev. Ebony Marshall.
