Rufus Ireland III, descendent of area's founding family Lifetime Amityville resident and member of many local clubs, Rufus J. Ireland III died April 6, 2008 at his home. The 81-year old was a descendent of one of the first founding families of Amityville. He was born September 8, 1926 to Rufus J. and Dorothy (nee Haff) Ireland, Jr., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. For many years he worked as a salesperson in Case Machinery in Huntington. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Amityville, a 50-year member of the Amityville Masonic Lodge, a longtime member of the Sunrise Fish and Game and Past Commodore of the Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club. Mr. Ireland leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Diana; his children: Randi and Rufus J. IV; his siblings: Clara Kennedy, Myton William Ireland and Sully Harwell. After a private cremation, a Memorial Service was held at Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club officiated by The Rev. Dr. Louise Stowe-Johns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. A Service was also conducted by the Amityville Masonic Lodge and a Military Guard was provided for Military Honors.
