Byron Howard, AMHS athlete and WWII veteran
By Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Amityville resident and World War II veteran, Byron "Ben" Howard, died February 23, 2008 after a short illness at the New York State Veteran's Home in Montrose, New York. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Howard was an Amityville High School graduate who excelled in baseball and wrestling. He is also the brother of former Amityville Village Mayor and New York State Assemblyman Lou Howard.

"We were as different as night and day but we were still close," said Lou. "He was always very popular." He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II on board the U.S.S. Baltimore and fought in many major sea battles including the invasion of Tarawa. During the war, he and his shipmates had the honor of escorting President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a meeting in Hawaii.

For many years, he worked at Grumman Aircraft Corp. in Bethpage and was an avid golfer.

In addition to his brother, Mr. Howard leaves behind his children: Sandra O'Brien of Pearl River, New York and Robert of Indianapolis, Indiana; his aunt and uncle: Jean and Donald Koos of Whiting, New Jersey and his sister-in-law Margaret of Amityville. He was predeceased by his longtime companion and friend, Elaine Johnson and his daughter, Gene.

A Military Service at Powell Funeral Home in Amityville was followed by private cremation.
