Amityville staff development addresses physical education

With current data and health trends indicating that obesity is on the rise and young people are more sedentary than ever, the Amityville Public School District has taken a proactive approach to this important issue by addressing physical education in the overall education of district students. At the fourth district staff development session on physical education, Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. John R. Williams, along with Athletic Director Hank Carpenter and Director of Physical Education Tony Cerullo, presented a workshop for teachers in the district's physical education and health department, and also discussed the Wellness Committee that will be put in place this year. "We know that we are working towards closing the achievement gap amongst our students," stated Dr. Williams in his opening remarks. "But is there also a healthy lifestyles' gap? And if there is, how do we begin to close it?"

The workshop went on to bring to the forefront many important statistics affecting African Americans, and how these statistics can be addressed in school through a set of three learning standards: 1) Personal Health and Fitness 2) Safe and Healthy Environment 3) Resource Management. Dr. Williams referenced the Daily Physical Activity (DPA) initiatives currently being implemented in Canadian schools, which require students in grades one to nine to participate in 30 minutes of daily physical activ- ity, and the positive results that Canadian school districts are seeing. "Your work contributes to the health of these students," stated Dr. Williams as he addressed the physical education and health department staff. "It is incumbent upon us to provide a good physical education and health program to help our students live long healthy lives."
