Amityville budget hearing set for Monday; increased costs and reduced revenues put pressure on tax rate
by Carolyn James

The Amityville Village Board will hold a public hearing on the 2008-09 budget Mon. April 14, 8 p.m. While the final proposal has not been put together, Amityville Village Mayor Peter T. Imbert said that he and the board are working to reduce the 12 percent year-to-year increase. If necessary, the board is prepared, he said, to use surplus funds from this year to offset a tax increase.

"Unfortunately we are being hit with a lot of increases as well as reductions in funding, primarily as a result in the slow down of mortgage refinancing," said Imbert. "But we are going to keep reviewing every item to reduce this increase."

Imbert and the other board members said that they anticipate to bring the increase down to approximately 5 or 6 percent.

The Village's current tax rate is $24.09. Its budget is $11,8530.59.
