Shinnecock tribe member Nettie Foster of Amityville Longtime Amityville resident and loving caretaker Nettie A. Eleazer Foster, who was lovingly called "Mother Foster," died March 9, 2008. A Native American of the Shinnecock Tribe in Southampton, she was 80 years old. Born October 5, 1927 in Bellport to Paul Cuffee and Rose (Smith) Eleazer, she dedicated her life to caring for others. A loving mother and wife, she spent most of her time caring for her large family and home. For many years, she was employed as a housekeeper in the Brightwaters area and was an active member of the Little Church of God in Christ in Central Islip, singing in the choir and working as a member of the hospitality board. Mrs. Foster leaves behind her children: Pauline, George, Christopher, Paul, Sherman, Shelley, Barrie, Keith, Debbie, Cynthia and Earle; 26 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; one great grandson; her sisters: Viola Gavin, Charlotte Pierce and Quantah Rose Samuels; and many other family members and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, George Robert in April 1995 and her children: Howard and Judy.
A Prayer Service was conducted at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville on March 12, 2008. The Reverend Roscoe Clairborne, pastor, Little Church of God in Christ, officiated at the Powell Funeral Home on March 13, 2008 followed by interment in Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
