Here's a look at how the local wrestlers did at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York on March 8 and 9:

Amityville: After his 6-2 win over Westhampton Beach's Paul Dilandro in the 152-pound Suffolk County championship, Amityville's Angel Mazara looked like a strong candidate to do well at the state championships. He won a close bout in his first match of the weekend, a 2-1 win over Jonah Messina of Cheektowaga (Section VI), but was eliminated from championship competition in Division I when he lost to Jonhson City's (Section IV) Peter Capone by a major decision, 14-0.

In the wrestle back matches, which are held to place consolation bracket winners, Mazara lost to John-Martin Canon of Section V's Brockport, 9-1.

Babylon: Colin Coffey (103 pounds) lost in the Division II prelminary round to Tonawanda's (Section VI) Kyle Mcgregor, 15-0, in a tech fall. He was eliminated from the tournament after his first wrestle back match, a 6-2 loss to Sarah Anderson, the tournament's only female competitor, of Schuylerville (Section III).

Sean Melow (185) also lost his preliminary round bout. He was pinned at 1:59 by Austin Lee of Cato Meridian (Section III). He had a bye in his first wrestle back match, then lost to Dan Ladd of Schuylerville, 5-1.

Copiague: Christian LaPersonerie (140) beat Dustin Shawcross of Indian River (Section III), 3- 2, in a close Division I preliminary round match, but lost 4-1 to Rob Troy of Walt Whitman, who he actually beat to win the Suffolk title three weeks earlier. In wrestle backs, he lost 3-2 to Ricky Bronson of Chenango Forks (Section IV).

Massapequa: Mike Doria (130) had a successful run in the big Division I bracket. He beat Vinnie Digravio of Wayne (Section V), 13-5 in a major decision, then trounced Lansinburgh's (Section II) Nick Oligney, 13-3, in another major decision, but lost to Brian Benton of Amsterdam (Section II), 10- 5, in the quarterfinals.

It was the same story for Shane Strumwasser (135). He beat Mike Castellano of Suffolk County's John Glenn, 5-1, in the preliminary round, beat Greece Athena's (Section V) Matt Mcguckin, 9-0, in a major decision and was eliminated in the quarterfinals after a 6-4 loss to Watertown's (Section III) Luke Bohn.

Plainedge: Rocky Cervini (140) lost in the quarterfinals of the Division I bracket. He lost 5-2 to Port Jervis' (Section IX) Sean Floor. Cervini opened the tournament with an 8-2 win over Rickey Bronson of Chenengo Forks, then beat Michael D'Amato of Valley Central (Section IX), 2-1.

John Makastchian (171) also lost in the quarterfinals. He was pinned at 2:36 of his match against Austin Meys of Shenendahowa (Section II). Meys went on to win the 171-pound title and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Division I tournament. He beat Sam Weiner of White Plains (Section I), 5-4, in the preliminary round, and defeated Zeke Stambovsky of Nyack (Section I), 12-9, in the second round.

Other Notes: Suffolk County, which is Section XI, finished third in Division I with 168.5 points. Section II won with 238 points and Section VIII came in second with 190 points.
