St. Martin students hold mock primaries
The seventh and eighth grade at St. Martin of Tours school in Amityville held a mock primary event using potato chips. The students were divided into five primary regions (10 states per group) and assigned a party affiliation. Two brands of potato chips were used for each party. Wise and Ruffles were Democrats, Pringles and Lays were Republicans. Four eighth grade students were chosen to each make a speech why their potato chip should be elected. Each primary group held their primary vote and a Democrat and a Republican were elected. These votes were conducted after a taste test and hearing the candidates speeches. Region one used a punch card voting system. Region four followed the caucus guidelines. Region two, three and five had paper ballots. After each primary, the winner was tallied and at the end of the primaries, the candidate with the most votes from their party went on to be the presidential candidate. It ended with Pringles facing off against Ruffles. Ruffles ended up as the overall winner.
The classes had some special guests sit in on their election. Officiating was Judge Debra Urbano- DiSalvo for the Village of Amityville. She is also the attorney for the Village of Hempstead and has a child at St. Martins.
