St. Martin's CYO Swim Team fast off the blocks

The Saint Martin of Tours CYO swim team has made a huge splash to start off the '08 season. The team, headed by coaches Ann Marie Daley and Eileen Bennett, moved up to the "A" division this year after winning the "B" division's regular season and championship meet last year. This year's team is impressive with 125 swimmers ages 6 to 18.

The team started off with back-to-back victories against St. Anne's of Garden City. In the first meet the 8 to 12 year olds took a commanding 79-29 lead on strong swimming by Greta Hartung, Caleigh Bennett, Kayla Riccio, Taryn Ohlmiller, Taylor McIntosh, Meaghan Graham, Elizabeth Hennelly, Kerry Whalen, Caroline Hennelly and Kelly Hughes for the girls. Brain Lehaghan, Christopher Arena, Keegan Cuminsky, Dylan Boyle, Chris Ubert, and Collin Fullford scored big for the boys.

In the "older" age groups, strong performances by Sarah Bennett, Lisa Coppola, Christine Sidor, Becky Papritz, Casey O'Neill, Jackie Ubert, Sarah Bove, Madison Fulford, Annie Gilligan, Kiersten Kissinger and Alex Bilello led the girls, while the boys were powered on by Stephen Sidor, Dan Oil, David Buschman, Sandy Bagdonas, Mike Litvinoff, Matt Parker, Kevin Daley, Derek Nehring, Steve Brodesser, Robbie Santucci, Tyler Mittleman, and Ben Gambella. Final score- St. Martin's 218, St. Anne's 164.

The next week posed a re-match and St. Anne's team swam strong trailing by only 35 points going into the relays. The girls 8 and under medley team of Caliegh Bennett, Kerri Whelan, Sam Gordon and Greta Hartung scored the only victory for St. Martins in the Medley races, allowing St. Anne's to close the gap to 10 points.

The freestyle relays went back and forth, with two exciting races determining the outcome. The first was the boys 10 and under with Spencer Hughes, Patrick Carter and Brendan keeping it close, allowing Keegan Cuminsky to come from behind and to nip the St. Anne's team and win the race. But it all came down to the last race. The score was tied at 187. Powerhouses Mike Litvinoff, Casey McGinley, Tim Erath, and Robbie Santucci swam strong and pulled out a one second win. Final Score- St. Martin's 193, St. Anne's 188. Up next, St. Raymond's of East Rockaway.
