Amityville Village settles new contract with its police officers The average annual salary for new police officers will be reduced by $5,000 as part of a new contract approved recently between the Amityville Police Department and Amityville Village. The change impacts on those hired after January, 2008, and covers civil service salary lines for offices from Academy through Step 5. The new contract runs through May 31, 2013 and also gives police officers on steps 2-6, a 4.2 percent increase this year, and a 3.9 percent increase each year for the duration of the contract. The Amityville Police contract is linked to the Suffolk contract. Currently, Suffolk Police are in negotiations with the county for a new contract and the Amityville salary lines will be adjusted, up or down, once that contract is signed. Sgt. Ernie Thompson, president of police uinion, said, however, that Suffolk is much further away from reaching any kind of an agreement but that it would not have been in the best interest of the Village to wait, since Amityville is scheduled to hire two police recruits soon. Mayor Peter T. Imbert and Thompson said the change will save money for the Village in the future, but does not reduce the salaries of any officers currently working for the Village. The Village is preparing to hire new recruits as a result of recent retirements and staff changes, including the retirement of Police Chief Woodrow Cromarty. "We had an unique opportunity because all of our current officers are affected by this change," said Mayor Peter T. Imbert, who was approached by Thompson to consider the change and negotiate the contract before the expiration of the current contract in June. "Officers hired now will know in advance what the salaries will be and we believe they are still competitive and that Amityville will remain a great place to work." "We thought it was a good opportunity for us to work with the Village on this and help them reduce costs down the line," said Thompson, adding that by opening the contract talks 6 months early, the Village was able to set the lower salaries before it hires new recruits. Salaries for officers at the Academy level will go from $57,494 a year to $47,494; step one officers will remain frozen at $59,811; step 2 officers will go from $76,317 to $70,317; step 3 will go from $78,633 to $74,633; step 4 will go from $90,966 to $84,966 and step 5 will go from $93,801 to $89,801. Step 6 will remain at $97,958.
The Village will also continue to pay 100 percent of the cost of health care for officers and their families, for both current and new hirees. Included in the contract are the department's sergeants and detectives.
