Amity teen saved from fire
Despite having no fire protective clothing on, Slack got a 6- foot ladder and put it up to the second floor of the home and with the help of APOChris Mullin who arrived at the scene, helped bring down 14-year-old Katerina Duarte to safety. Moments later, the house erupted fully in flames. "I had to stand on the last rung of the ladder," said Slack. "I held my arms up to her and told her to jump and that I would get her down." Without a word, Katerina moved down on to Slack's shoulder. "I told her to hold on as tight as she could," he said. Once on the ground safely, the home erupted into flames. "I don't think a minute passed," said Slack Sara Duarte, 39, Katerina's mother, and her younger sister, Sophie 11, made it out of the house and were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Sara had second and third degree burns to her hands and Sophie, who fell from the second story, was treated for broken toes. Katerina reported no injuries.
Police said that the fire apparently started from a fireplace that was located in the center of the home, spreading flames and smoke quickly.
