Nurse Mary Gero teaches children to stay healthy
With the cold and flu season upon us, nurse Mary Gero, at St. Martin of Tours School in Amityville is being proactive in trying to show the students ways to prevent illness and absences. Gero had two microbiologists from Good Samaritan Hospital come to the school to give an Interactive Handwashing Workshop. The workshop included the difference between good and bad germs, how germs are spread and proper hand washing technique. The workshop was designed for the students in grades kindergarten through fourth. It was informative and fun. At the end of the workshop, the microbiologists had three volunteers from each class put their hands on an agar plate, which is a petri dish that the microbiologists will bring to Good Samaritan Hospital to see if the students had germs on their hands. They will send pictures back to the classes with what was on the plates. A tool used in the hands-on lesson is Puppet Misty; she shows the students what to do when someone coughs on their hands and then goes to shake hands with someone else. Shown, left to right, are nurse Gero; microbiologists Lynne Smith holding Misty, Rita Austin and first grade students Michelle George, Conor Nugent and Matthew Texeira.
