Amity Students share lessons with family

If you've ever wanted to get a glimpse into your child's classroom to see what his or her day is like, Park Avenue Elementary School in the Amityville Public School District is the place to be. As part of their commitment to "educating the whole child," Park Avenue administrators and staff have been continuing to plan and host monthly workshops that focus on including the family in the educational process of Park Avenue students. In their latest evening gathering, fourth grade students took center stage and ran the show, giving families in attendance insight into their daily classroom learning as they conducted a math lesson using a large overhead projector and various strategies they have gleaned from their teachers, who use a constructivist approach to the teaching of mathematics. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Susan Schnebel were on hand to witness all of the hard work and preparation that went into the planning of the evening, which included a chance to win a raffle, with prizes donated by the Amityville Federation of Teachers.
