St. Martin's school in Amityville celebrates Catholic School Week

Sunday, Jan. 27 was the start of Catholic Schools Week. St. Martin of Tours school in Amityville started off the week with a special mass at the church; the principal, all the teachers, staff and most of the students attended it. The 2008 theme is Catholic Schools Light the Way: the theme focuses on the leadership that Catholic Schools provide to our nation.

Throughout the week, the students and teachers were celebrating what it means to be involved in Catholic education for their school, their church and

their community. Different activities were planned for the week. Monday, a math bee was held in the church for the fifth and sixth grade. Matt Burnett, who is in the sixth grade, won. He is shown with the first runner up, sixth grader Eduardo Ramirez and school principal, Kathleen Razzetti. Wednesday there was a spelling bee for the seventh and eighth grade; Melanie Bellevue, a seventh grader won. She is shown accepting her trophy from Principal Razzetti. Thursday, the fourth grade celebrated Chinese New Year. The students, along with their parents and grandparents,

made and painted paper lanterns. After their projects they all enjoyed some rice and egg rolls. Friday, the Home School Association hosted a luncheon for the teachers and staff at Paddy's Loft restaurant.
