Stop World Hunger sets annual tennis tournament fundraiser

Stop World Hunger, Inc. has announced its schedule of tennis events for the spring. This is the 28th year of tennis programs to stop hunger on the local and international levels. Last year, tennis players from more than 60 communities on Long Island took part in the various tennis events.

First up for the 2008 tennis season will be a tennis party at Carefree Racquet Club in North Merrick on Sat. March 15, 8 p.m. to midnight. Participants are guaranteed two hours of playing time and light refreshments, also. The cost is $15 per player and canned food will be collected for the hungry on Long Island.

Next up will be the annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Events consist of singles for men, women and seniors. Doubles events are for men, women and mixed teams. Divisions for each event are set up according to the ability levels and geographic locations of the players. Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. The cost is $6 for the singles events and $10 per team for doubles.

The tennis tournament is an ideal way to sharpen tennis skills and develop new friendships. There's something for young and old, as well as intermediate, advanced intermediate and advanced players. The deadline for registration is Tues., March 25. All matches are to be played between April 5 and June 8.

All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided in 99 countries based upon need regardless of race, religion and/ or nationality.

The schedule for additional Stop World Hunger tennis events will be announced later in the year. Events will include the 28th Annual Summer/ Fall Tennis Tournament and tennis parties in June, October and December.
