Resident asks Village to consider leaf blower ban A Village resident approached the Amityville Village Board this month, asking it to consider placing a ban on leaf blowers, saying that the use of these blowers have negative impacts on the environment and people's health- all in the name of giving Long Islanders "better looking lawns." "I know this is a sensitive issue, but I would ask that you take it under consideration," said Janet Marcley. She pointed out that leaf blowers add to the problems associated with asthma and allergies because they allow pesticides, mold, bird droppings, dust and other hard particles to become airborne. In addition, they result in the use valuable resources because they require use of plastic bags, electricity or fuel oil and the organic matter from the leaves that could naturally fertilize lawns. Instead, she suggested that the Village could collect leaves from storm drains to prevent blockage and water back-ups and mulch leaves at a compost center for residents. The board agreed that it would be a difficult measure to pass, but said they would look into the issue. In other Village news, •the board declined an application for a caberet license for Misael Guardado of Punta Roca, 528-30 Broadway, telling the owner that his premise has been the subject of numerous disturbances and police calls. Mayor Imbert told Guardado that he should work on operating a more orderly premises and come back to the board in several months at which time they would review the application again; •the board awarded a probationary cabaret license to George Romano of JJ's Tavern at 139 Merrick Rd., telling Romano that he had to maintain "diligent control over the establishment," or face revocation of the license. •Trustee Peter Casserly reported that the Village Fire Department responded to 17 fire calls in December, 1 vehicle fire, 72 rescue calls and a call for mutual aid; •Trustee Ed Johnson reported that the court handled 186 parking tickets, up significantly from last year and took in a total of $82,805 in fines during 2007; •Trustee Richard Ubert reported that the building department took in $36,225 in revenue for building permits and other fees; •approved a request from former Police Chief Woodrow Cromarty that he keep two Chief's badges and his Glock 19.
The next Amityville Village Board meeting is Feb. 26, Wm. Kay Memorial Building, Court Room, second floor. The meeting begins at 8 p.m.
