John Fedel: Amityville crossing guard, former K of C Grand Knight Longtime Amityville resident and devoted parishioner at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, Milton John Fedel, known as John, died Jan. 26, 2008 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was known to generations of Amityville children as a local crossing guard who worked in the Village for 18 years. He was 85 years old. He was born March 25, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts to William C. and Mary J. (nee Long) and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in South Pacific's Gilbert Islands. Mr. Fedel was a familiar face to many an Amityville family, as he was assigned to the same crossing post in front of St. Martin of Tours School for many years. He was a longtime member of the Amityville Knights of Columbus and was their Grand Knight from 1973 to 1975. He was an active parishioner and usher for the daily 7:30 A.M. Mass at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church for the past 18 years and was a life member of Our Lady of Fatima with a fourth degree general assembly. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Catherine D. of Amityville. A prayer service was held on Jan. 28, 2008 followed by an Amityville Knights of Columbus service and a Fourth Degree service at the Powell Funeral Home, Broadway, Amityville. Rev. Father Richard T. Stelter, pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church officiated at a Mass of Christian burial on Jan. 29, 2008, assisted by the Consolation Ministry. Interment followed in Calverton National Cemetery with Military Honors.
