Don’t drive to the bank in a stolen car; don’t violate vehicle and traffic laws along the way, and don’t—not ever— prewrite the demand note and put it into your pocket when you leave the house. All of that, and more, got Paul D. Nantista, 37, behind bars. Amityville Village Police gave this account: At approximately 1:33 p.m., Jan. 22, APO Joe Slack was on patrol when he noticed Nantista, of 273 S. 6 St., Lindenhurst, operating a 2002 Toyota on Edison Street and Deforest Ave., Amityville. Nantista was not wearing a seat belt and failed to use his directional when making a right turn on Deforest Avenue, where he also drove out of lane. Slack attempted to stop Nantista, fled the scene in the vehicle, heading to Great Neck Road and learned that the vehicle was reported stolen. With Slack in pursuit, Nantista drove his vehicle onto a curb in front of 355 Dixon Avenue, crossing the front lawn there and coming to a sudden stop. Nantista attempted to get out of the vehicle as it was moving and police said his leg got caught beneath the still-moving wheel, injuring him. Slack, by then joined by Sgt. Brian Smith and APO Eric Onderdonk, wrestled Nantista to the ground and placed him under arrest. During the course of a search of his person, police found a demand note in the pocket of his jeans. Nantista was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; fleeing police and operating under the influence. He was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for the injuries to his leg and released.
