Amityville students share holiday magic

Students at Amityville Memorial High School (AMHS) continued their yearly tradition and teamed up with the Hauppauge law office of Charles Russo and Associates to make the holidays brighter for those less fortunate through their participation in the Christmas Magic program sponsored by Russo and his colleagues. Residents of "Help Suffolk," a homeless shelter in Bellport, were selected this year to benefit from the hard work and dedication put forth over three days by Amityville students and staff who were a part of Christmas Magic.

On the first day of Christmas Magic, Amityville students visited the law office of Russo, which was bursting with donated toys and gifts. Armed with wish lists they received from the residents of the Help Suffolk Shelter, and assisted by AMHS teachers Jason McGowan and Jaime Seubert, Amityville students were able to "shop" in Mr. Russo's law office as they began to fulfill the wish lists of the people they were designated to help through Christmas Magic this year. On the second day, AMHS teacher Rebecca De Paolo supervised the Amityville elves during a trip to Target, where they were able to check off the remaining items on the lists they received from the residents of the shelter. Students also helped wrap the gifts and prepare them for delivery to the grateful recipients.

At the culmination of the Christmas Magic program, seven of the two dozen AMHS students who participated in Christmas Magic (Reyana Williams, Gabrielle Bernard, Ashley Earekson, Vanessa Bailey, Michelle Lagrassa, Lilian Lopez and Tishari Tate), had the opportunity serve a meal of prime rib and hand out grab bag gifts at the Second Annual Holiday Dinner held by Charles Russo, Christmas Magic and Every Child's Dream Inc. Residents of local shelters, and the underprivileged and the homeless attended the party, where they not only received dinner and desert, but also enjoyed a visit with Santa, good company and music, and a gourmet meal prepared by an executive chef. "The Amityville students had a great responsibility in helping the dinner event run smoothly and they did a fantastic job," stated AMHS teacher Jason McGowan, who facilitates Christmas Magic amongst the students each year. The group will continue their community service throughout the year, and have plans to attend "Have a Heart for the Homeless," a candlelight vigil held in February and designed to raise awareness and funds for the homeless across Long Island.
