Blaze destroys N. Amityville home

Amityville, Copiague and North Amityville firefighters responded to a home at 86 Coolidge Ave., North Amityville Jan. 26. The home was fully involved when firefighters pulled up to the scene. The blaze apparently started when an oil burner ignited a nearby wall.

"When we pulled up there was smoke coming out of the windows," said North Amityville Chief Shelly Henry. "We determined that everyone was out of the house and then began to look for the source of the fire."

Henry said that initially there was a lot of smoke as the fire extended up through the floors of the two story house and then flashed.

"It moved rather quickly," he said.

In all, approximately 40 volunteers were at the scene battling the blaze. It took them about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control and another hour and a half to secure the site.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene and provided the family with emergency shelter and food vouchers.
