Edmund W. Miles Middle School Drama Club Prepares for Spring Production

The Edmund W. Miles Middle School drama club announced its spring musical for 2008. This year, the group will perform Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, Jr. This show, based on the classic movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is the first official adaptation of the film by the original songwriting team of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.

Based on the classic novel by Roald Dahl, Willy Wonka is the story of Charlie Bucket, a poor child with a heart of gold and ceaseless optimism who wins an opportunity to tour the world famous Wonka Chocolate Factory. There, he meets the legendary chocolatier Willy Wonka, who takes Charlie and four other not-so-nice children on a tour that will test their character, as he seeks out the one to inherit his factory and keep his legacy alive.

There are eight new songs written for the show which compliment the already famous songs from the movie such as Pure Imagination, The Candy Man, I Want It Now, Golden Ticket, and Oompa Loompa. This telling of the story is closer to the original novel, which focused more on Charlie's home life, and how good parenting allows him to overcome his circumstances and become a person of good character.

The E.W.Miles Middle School drama club was created in 2005 by Carl J Ferrara, at the request of then principal George Giberti. Past productions have included Once On This Island Jr., Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Seussical Jr. Many of these shows are from Music Theatre International's Broadway Junior Collection, which takes full-length musicals and adapts them for middle school aged kids, editing for content, and arranging the songs for middle school voices.

Performances of Willy Wonka Jr. will take place at Amityville Memorial High School on April 11 and 12, 2008 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 ($5 for students and seniors). For information, contact Director Carl J. Ferrara at 631-789-6253.
