The black candle is placed in the center of the Kinara. Three red candles are placed on the left side of the Kinara and three green candles are placed on the right side of the Kinara. The candles are lit in the order that they are numbered. Each represents a day of Kwanzaa. The black candle is lit to represent Black people in unity. The red candle represents the blood shed in the struggle (Umoja) for liberation. The green candle is symbolic of the land. The candles from the previous day are re-lit each day until all candles are lit on the last day of the celebration.
