100 percent compliance in Babylon SLA checks

There is nothing new about police routinely checking to ensure that the owners of delis and mini marts are complying with the law by refusing to sell beer or other alcohol to underaged customers. What's unusual about a recent sweep in the First Precinct, however, is that all 18 establishments checked Jan. 22, complied by refusing to sell alcohol to an underaged police volunteer.

"This speaks a lot for employees who take the time to check to ensure that their customers have proper identification and are not underaged," said Robert Cassagne, Inspector and Commanding Officers of the Suffolk County First Precinct. "And it speaks to the responsibility of these business owners who not only understand the seriousness of violating the law but also the serious problems that could arise by selling alcohol to young people."

Cassagne said that the Precinct has been "proactive," in its approach to cracking down on underaged drinking, and has seen an increase in the level of compliance by these establishments as a result.

"There's no question that word is getting out that we are out there checking," said Cassagne.

The undercover operation Jan. 22, conducted by the First Precinct's Crime Section, used a volunteer, under 21, who was sent to 18 establishments with the intent to purchase beer. All of the following establishments checked for proper identification and refused to sell beer to the minor: Getty Gas, 687 Rte. 109, West Babylon; Gull Gas, Rte. 109 and North Wellwood Ave., North Lindenhurst; Manatinas Deli, Conklin and Walnut Streets, East Farmingdale; Exxon Gas, Rte. 110 and Conklin St., East Farmingdale, Hess Gas, Rte 110 and Smith St., East Farmingdale; Valero Gas, Little East NeckRoad, and Long Island Avenue, Wyandanch; Liberty Mart, Wyandanch and Belmont Avenues, North Babylon; Getty Gas, Commack and Bay Shore Roads, Deer Park; Tineo Deli and Grocery Commack and Bay Shore Roads; American Mini Mart, Bay Shore and Woods Roads,Deer Park; U.S. Gas, Commack Road and Grand Boulevard, Deer Park; OK Petroleum, Deer Park Avenue and Veronica La., North Babylon; Babylon Grocery, 9 Railroad Ave., Babylon, and Quizqueya Deli, 369 Rte. 109, West Babylon. Another gasoline station, not named but located at CommackRoad and Suburban Avenue, Deer Park, also complied.

Any business that sells alcohol to individuals under the age of 21 faces revocation of his or her State Liquor Authority license to sell alcohol, fines and other penalties.
