Amityville Village Board honors residents for service
In accepting a plaque recognizing his community commitment, James told the board that he appreciated the faith that they had in him during the years he also served on the Village's Zoning Board of Appeals. "He is a pure gentleman," said Denis Siry, who served with James on the Zoning Board. "We appreciate what you have done for the entire Village of Amityville. James served for more than 35 years with the Amityville Village Fire Department. He was Captain of Hook and Ladder, Rescue and served on many department committees. He was an EMT and advanced emergency medical technician. For eight years, he served in the Chief's office as an assistant, and then from 1992 to 1993 as Chief of the Department. "He was a good member and friend," said Amityville Fire Chief Arthur Smith. "When I was running for chief, I turned to him for help and we all wish him luck in his retirement." In addition to the award for James, the Village Board recognized:
•Village resident and local attorney LeRoy Van Nostrand on the occasion of his 90th birthday. He attended the ceremony with is wife Margaret (Peggy) and family; •resident Henry C. Tomlinson Past Grand Knight for St. Martin's Knights of Columbus Council #2489. Tomlinson was raised on Clocks Boulevard and attended St. Martin's Grammar School and graduated from Amityville Memorial High School. Professionally he worked in the food ser- vice industry for major chains such as Roy Rogers, Friendly's, Coco's and the famous Juniors Restaurant in downtown Brooklyn. Since 1976, he has been married to his wife Doreen and the couple have six sons. He joined the K of C in the 1960s and then moved from Amityville , returning in 1984 and once again becoming active in the Knights. He is a St. Martin's Council Trustee, a Warden in the 11th District and a patron of Our Lady of Fatima Assembly.
