Here's a look at the latest action for the boys' basketball teams in our readership areas: All information is as of January 2.

Amityville: Basketball on Long Island wouldn't be whole without a talented Amityville boys' basketball team that knows how to score. While Miller Place and Glenn have talented teams in League VI, the Warriors will be a playoff contender and have some sleepers on their roster.

They took third place at the Josh Palmer Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Elmira, New York on December 29. The Warriors beat Section V's Corning High School, 64-55, in the consolation final. Freshman Darien Crost scored a game and career-high of 22 points.

Prior to that game, on Dec. 20, the Warriors beat Shoreham Wading River, 70-29, in a league battle.

Babylon: The Panthers have a streaky team this year. On Dec. 21, they beat Hampton Bays 75-46 and looked great, and then on Dec. 29 they lost, 59-52, to East Islip. The talent on the opposing rosters does vary, but Babylon has some structural work to do before the playoffs roll around, which happens quicker than you think.

Their constant strength is the offensive prowess of guard James Pate. The senior has been tearing apart opposing defenses for years and is one of the smoothest gliding players in the paint on Long Island.

Copiague: Mervin Springer is the gem on this year's Eagles roster. He's averaging more than 21 points a game for a Copiague team that appears to be a favorite in League III again this season. It's still early, but the program is a perennial contender. Plus, with the play of Springer, who will most likely have one of the highest scoring averages in Suffolk County at season's end if he keeps this pace up, they're an automatic top three seed. Springer scored a game-high 23 points in the consolation final of the Chamber of Commerce Tip-off Tournament on Dec. 29 against Kings Park. The Eagles won, 71- 64.

Deer Park: Josh Malone is Deer Park's Mervin Springer. The junior guard scored 31 points in a 53-50 win over Northport on Dec. 29. He also sunk 33 points, 25 in the second half, in a 65-58 win over Huntington on Dec. 27.

Lindenhurst: Chris Johnson scored all of his 20 points in the second half of Lindenhurst's 57-54 win over North Babylon on Dec. 28. The team outscored North Babylon, 40-17, in the second half and took a 54-53 lead with 50 seconds left. Brian Cervantes hit the game-winning shot moments later.

North Babylon: The Bulldogs hit a rough patch towards the end of 2007. Their last win was on Dec. 12, a 51-49 victory over Huntington. Then they were blown out, 97-51, by Brentwood on Dec. 14, lost 59- 45 to Smithtown East on Dec. 20 and lost to Lindenhurst 57-54 on Dec. 28.

West Babylon: Starting off the season 1-7 is never easy. The Eagles have been struggling, however, their recent win over William Floyd, which has a very good basketball program and are good every year brought some level of optimism. That win can have some positives surrounding it.

West Islip: League II is all about Whitman and West Islip, who both have undefeated overall records so far. Whitman is 6-0, while the Lions are 5-0. The Lions beat Floyd in the Colonial's Holiday Classic, 47-32, with relative ease. Nicky Galasso scored a game-high 23 points.
