Amityville Police Chief Woodrow Cromarty retires this week Woodrow Cromarty more than 30 years career in law enforcement today when he steps down as Chief for the Amityville Village Police Department. Replacing Cromarty is Lt. Donald Dobby who assumes the post tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 24. At a Village Board meeting Jan. 14, Mayor Peter T. Imbert and Trustees thanked Cromarty for his service to Amityville. "We thank you for your service; you have done a wonderful job as Chief and we wish you the best in your retirement," said Imbert. "And thank you for your service to the Village for more than 30 years." Cromarty spoke briefly telling the board and the public that he appreciated the support he received over the years. "Thank you for that, and for the money you gave me to run the department," said Cromarty. "You can't have a good police department without the support of the officials and the public and the money needed to do the things that need to be done." Lt. Dobby has been with the department for 24 years. In a statement, he thanked everyone, saying "you don't do it alone." "Events put me here and I think of the words of Tony Snow, the President's spokesman who was recently diagnosed with cancer," said Dobby. "He said that looking down the long road of life you want it to be straight and narrow with no hurdles, but sometimes God takes you off the roadway. I have been off that road and many people here helped put me back on it and I would not be here tonight without them. "
He thanked the board for having "faith and trust" in him and his colleagues. "It is good to be in such a fine fraternity," he said. "We will continue our mission of giving Amityville the number-one police department in the nation."
